Introduction
An adequate public transport network is essential to achieve sustainable mobility.
Problem
The increase of population in urban areas, the growth of the cities and the long distances between residential areas and work places have created a mobility necessity that has been mainly covered by private vehicles. The use of private transport involves several problems: traffic jams, air and noise pollution, higher energy consumption…
Description
Sustainable mobility is a key concept in order to achieve environmental sustainability in urban areas. In this field, it is essential to develop an adequate public transport network, which may improve the citizens’ quality of life, reduce both air and noise pollution and promote a better use of land and energy.
Approach
To compete with private vehicles, the public transport network must improve its velocity, regularity and general comfort. It is also desirable that the means of transport are accessible to all citizens, inexpensive, silent and environmentally friendly.
