Young people and transport: understanding their needs and requirements - UK
Introduction
An investigation into the travel uses, experiences and needs of young people.
Description
The report analyses young people's travel patterns by mode of transport and purpose of travel; and school travel by age group and household car ownership. It discusses whether young people would like to make more or different journeys, what inhibits these journeys and what would help them. Information is presented on: young people's use of public transport and their attitudes towards it; patterns of and attitudes towards cycling and walking; the role of cars; parental concerns and influences on different modes of transport; and involvement in the decisions made by transport providers.
Background information
As current customers and future users of public and other modes of transport, young people’s views are important in understanding how services should be developed for the future.  This study aimed to explore the importance of travel in young people’s lives, patterns of travel behaviour, experiences of travel and any barriers to travel or different modes of transport.
Methodology
The research included data collection from young people via surveys and seven focus groups.  Two focus groups were also held with parents and carers.  In addition transport operators and providers were surveyed and interviewed to establish current transport provision for young people and to explore young people’s involvement in transport decision making.  A literature review of previous research was conducted.
Conclusions
Some evidence was found that young people experience problems in accessing modes of transport and that this may inhibit their part-time employment and taking part in leisure activities. Cost of public transport was also an issue as was the length of time journeys take and safety and security. Cycling is not generally used as a mode of transport because of poor facilities, fear of crime and fear for personal safety, however walking is a key mode of transport. In general, young people felt that their views on transport were not listened to, and they did not feel it worth their while to use bus company complaints procedures. Future research is recommended to explore further the barriers young people felt.
