Traffic in Helsinki 2002
Introduction
Helsinki is a growing capital city and an important traffic hub by the Baltic Sea. The city is balancing between road transport, sustainable public transport system and the inhabitants' needs.
Description
The publication contains articles on recent and future traffic-related changes and issues in Helsinki, main topics being: Public transport system, environmental impacts of traffic, transport habits, traffic and passenger volumes, car traffic flow, traffic control system and telematics, transportation economics, vehicle stock, road accidents, transport policy and infrastructure.
Conclusions
City population growth together with growth of car traffic in Helsinki region bring about logistical and environmental problems that need to be addressed. Air quality has become one of the most important issues. Motor vehicle exhaust gas emissions, especially those from goods traffic and passenger cars, cause the greatest adverse environmental impact caused by traffic.
It is necessary to support an environmental-friendly infrastructure, transport system and transport habits so that traffic in Helsinki will not rely on cars. The diverse public transport system will be improved further with emphasis on rail transport. An extensive telematics system is being used to enhance the standard of service in public transport.
