Columbus Project: Urban Mobility improvement in the Cartuja Island and its surroundings - Seville, ES
Introduction
The objective of this Project is to improve traffic management in the area of the Technological Park Cartuja 93.
Problem
In a big urban area such as Seville, the transport sector is one of the main consumers of energy (about 38% of the total), and responsible of the 44% of the emissions of CO2. The mobility pattern in the area is clearly radial, with the city of Seville being the destination of the 85,4% of the trips in private vehicles. Taking into consideration these data becomes clear that the mobility problem transcends the energetic field and becomes one of the main concerns of the city from the environmental point of view.
Description
From the mobility point of view, one of the most conflictive areas in Seville is the Technological Park Cartuja 93, which holds over 260 companies that employ more than 11.000 people, as well as two university departments with 9.000 students. The Energy Agency of Seville has developed an action strategy which includes specific mobility plans for the main companies of the area, a redefinition of the integral mobility system and actions directed to change the habits of the people who work or study there.
Approach
The main objective of this action is to improve mobility in the area of the Cartuja island in Seville, introducing new practices that reduce energy use and CO2 emissions and promoting less polluting means of transport such as bicycles, bikes or public transport (bus, train etc.).
Results
  • Change in the mobility habits.
  • Involvement of the companies of the area (mobility plans, staggered schedules...).
  • Less traffic jams in rush hours.
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions.
  • Increase of the citizens' awareness on the importance of good energy use.
