Municipal bicycles - Granollers, ES
Introduction
This project provides the workers of the Granollers City Council with public bicycles to improve their mobility.
Problem
How to improve the use of sustainable means of transport among the employees of the Granollers City Council.
Description
The Department of Mobility of the Granollers City Council acquired a fleet of 20 bicycles to promote their use between public workers. The bicycles were distributed among the different municipal buildings, and put at the disposal of all City Council employees for their common trips.
After a year, six new bicycles were bought in order to satisfy the demand. The Department of Mobility is in charge of the maintenance and repair of the bicycles, which is commissioned to a local repair shop.
Approach
The programme has three objectives:
  • Offer the public workers a means of transport for short trips that improves their working conditions.
  • Promote through the example the use of the bicycle in the city of Granollers.
  • Increase the use of the bicycle as an urban means of transport.
Results
The use of the bicycles has increased progressively since the start of the project, in early 2005. Besides, the fleet has been increased in six units in order to satisfy the demands. Another indicator of the success of the project is that different departments of the City Council have formulated requests concerning this service.
