The House of Daily Life – Turin, IT
Introduction
As part of the social strand of the Mirafiori Nord regeneration plan, the city of Turin is converting an abandoned farmhouse and its four hectare site into a modern social services centre. The centre had been named The House of Daily Life.
Problem
The Mirafiori Nord area is located close to the Fiat factories, which have been severely affected by the crisis in the automotive sector. The area has a high concentration of social housing and is struggling with severe social and economic problems.
Description
The House of Daily Life will have multiple functions. It will serve as a laboratory for poverty and conflict management and resolution, and as an observatory to monitor social needs. It will also participate in the development and implementation of social projects and provide basic social services to the local community. A nursery and play area, a thematic library and a meeting centre for the elderly will also be incorporated into the new centre.
Approach
Prior to the implementation of the project, a consultation process was carried out by the Social Table ('Tavolo Sociale'), the urban management structure created to reorganise and improve public services in the URBAN area.
The consultation revealed that elderly people living in the area have a considerable amount of spare time and are often professionally skilled. More importantly, they are interested in giving using their time and skills for the benefit of the local community. The project will therefore try to exploit this local resource by involving these elderly people in the running of the centre, and specifically in organising arts and crafts workshops and training.
Results
So far, no results have been published. The project will be evaluated at the end of its implementation phase.
EU involvement
The total cost of the project is 3.6 million euros. The URBAN II programme of the European Commission provided 1.6 million euros.
