Introduction
The basic idea behind the sustainable home services project is that the environmental and social burdens can be reduced. This can happen by  replacing these burdens with products and services that fulfil the same needs of the consumer without actually causing environmental and social burdens.
Description
In this project, research was conducted to find out about the market niches, so that the right conditions could be found for home services.
The research is conducted in the following service areas: Consulting and information, care and supervision, Leisure time services/activities, repairs, mobility and delivery, safety and security and supply and disposal.
This project seeks to answer how these kinds of services could be promoted and how existing services could be improved to be more sustainable.
Background information
The main goal of the project is to stimulate the introduction of sustainable home services in Europe. Competition in the housing market is increasing. For organisations involved there are various ways to
meet this competitive challenge. One of them is the extension of the supply of home services to residents. So the principal target groups of the project are the residents, the intermediaries, such as the housings organisations, and the service providers.
EU involvement
The sustainable home services project is co-financed by the European Union. (The project is funded by the European commission within the framework of the program “the City of tomorrow and cultural heritage)
Conclusions
All sustainability conditions –environmental, social and economic – are difficult to fulfil simultaneously and therefore it may be useful for pragmatic reasons to accept that a sustainable service is one that satisfies two of the three conditions. For the time being there are no absolute criteria for measuring sustainability of specific services directed to households.
