European Urban Landscape Partnership (EULP)
Introduction
The European Urban Landscape Partnership is network of more than 100 European universities, approx. 60 cities and other organisations with interests in urban landscape teaching and research at European level.
Description
Over the past century, the attention for green and open spaces in urban areas has tended to focus on merely one of their functions, e.g. the way in which they can stimulate the urban economy. This is why the European Landscape Convention, which was signed by the members of the European Council in 2000, calls for an integrated and coordinated approach to the planning, design and management of the urban landscapes. The European countries should place equal value on the social, ecological, symbolic, economical, health and environmental benefits which open and green spaces can bring to urban areas.
The implementation of the European Landscape Convention is at the heart of the European Urban Landscape Partnership (EULP). The EULP is a long-term partnership for the planning, design and management of Europe’s urban landscape. It is created through the EU-funded Le:Notre Thematic Network Project in Landscape Architecture.
The EULP’s membership is open to
  • universities;
  • cities;
  • municipal authorities;
  • non-governmental organisations (NGOs); and
  • local, national and European governmental organisations.
In this way, it links practitioners, academic researchers, and national and European policy and decision makers.
Participants
  • All the universities participating in the Le:Notre project
  • Cities: Amsterdam, Ankara, Apeldoorn, Athens, Barcelona, Belgrade, Berlin, Birmingham, Bordeaux, Bratislava, Brno, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Cracow, Dresden, Dublin, Edinburgh, Essen, Gaza City, Geneva, Ghent, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Hannover, Helsinki, Istanbul, Izmir, Kassel, Kiev, Lisbon, Ljubljana, London, Lviv, Madrid, Majadahonda, Malmo, Manchester, Marseille, Milan, Munich, Oslo, Padua, Paris, Porto, Prague, Riga, Rome, Rotterdam, Sarajevo, Sofia, Stockholm, Stuttgart, Tallinn, Utrecht, Vienna, Vila Real, Vilnius, Warsaw, Zagreb, Zurich.
Objectives
The overall objective of the European Urban Landscape Partnership is to promote the planning and management of the urban landscape. This is a key element in an integrated strategy for the conservation and development of the urban environment.
Further objectives are
  • to establish a permanent internet-based information centre and communication structure, through which experience and best practice are presented, developed and exchanged between European cities and universities;
  • to strengthen links between teaching, research and practice, thereby furthering and informing the implementation of the European Landscape Convention within Europe’s metropolitan regions.
EU involvement
The European Urban Landscape Partnership is funded in the framework of the Socrates programme of the European Union.
