Renovation of the promenade along the stone bridge – Písek, CZ
Introduction
The project focuses on the reconstruction of buildings and public areas in the historical town centre in order to increase the attractiveness of the place and to improve the quality of living conditions for the inhabitants of the town and its visitors.
Problem
The statistics of the town of Písek show an increase in unemployment within the region. The implementation of the project will widen the tourist infrastructure and generate further jobs in this sector. Besides, the area was excluded from the town centre and several buildings were neglected by the original owner and were damaged by the floods in 2002.
Description
In general, the proposed project has the following objectives:
  • A comprehensive reconstruction and renovation of the dilapidated, historically valuable parts of the town in order to create conditions for the fulfilment and attainment of a sustainable development of the town and the overall improvement of the regional infrastructure.
  • The renovation of buildings not in use and buildings that have been damaged by floods will help to improve the physical conditions of the historical centre of the town.
  • To boost up the economy of the town by founding conditions for new activities within the private and public sector, in particular in terms of the infrastructure of services and tourist products.
  • To create conditions for the creation of new jobs whilst observing the principles of equal work opportunities.
  • To improve the environmental conditions for the inhabitants of the town, the region and its visitors by reconstructing the sewage mains and the reclamation of greenery and public areas.
Approach
The project was created in direct cooperation with partners from a non-profit sector to suit their further intentions once the project is implemented.
The representatives of the town have closely cooperated with various institutions during the preparation of the strategic plan for the development of the town, in particular in terms of the analysis of the profile and problematic areas of the town and during the definition of objectives leading to the elimination of negative impacts from the critical areas. Besides, the private sector (businessmen, non-profit organisations) directly cooperated as well during the preparation of project documentation.
Physical strategies have been viewed as very important for the project and they were closely monitored during the preparation of strategic plans, but they were not seen as the only part of the plans. The analysis and identification of benefits, the outputs form the project with an impact on the life of the town communicates in terms of projected long-term visions, have been similarly important for the process.
Results
The project is still in progress. The partial completion of the 1st stage of the project means that the town moats have been reconstructed and opened up to the public. The projected usage was for the moats, amongst others, to serve as a stage for various cultural events. The renovated area has already been used for a number of cultural events (theatrical performances, concerts, workshops, picnics etc) and has become a popular place for staging these types of events.
Beneficiaries
The aim of the project is to create outputs which will improve the living conditions in the historical centre of the town with benefits for all groups of the community and also for the visitors of the town regardless their age, sex and nationality.
