Introduction

The aim of the project is to design an urban tree management plan for the city of León.

Problem

The local administration fails to perceive tree management as a function different to street furniture and fixing. However, the survival of individual trees and the arrangement of trees in streets and avenues is a complex issue that should involve citizens' participation.

Description

The city of León doesn't have an urban tree management plan, and thus there are no technical criteria for species selection, pruning techniques and seasons, etc.; neither quality control. The main objectives of this project are:

Increase the knowledge on Leon urban trees.
Organise the management using sustainable arboriculture criteria.
Develop information campaigns to increase environmental awareness.

Approach

The main actions involved in the plan are:

Provide specific formation to the staff involved.
Make an inventory of urban trees.
Pass a local regulation on urban tree management.
Select the optimal species for each street/area.
Revitalise the local tree nurseries.
Develop citizens' participation campaigns and increase environmental awareness.
