European Mobility Week 2008 to take place from 16 to 22 September
Introduction
From 16 to 22 September 2008 European cities and towns will have the opportunity to participate in the most widespread event on sustainable mobility: the European Mobility Week. This special week is completely dedicated to sustainable mobility and involves more than 2000 cities and towns in Europe, which will all organise their own events and activities. The event has been organised annually since 2002. This year will be the 7th edition of the Mobility Week.
Description
The European Mobility Week gives cities and towns the opportunity to initiate a wide range of activities and represents a platform for local authorities as well as organisations and associations to:
  • promote their existing policies, initiatives and best practices related to sustainable urban mobility;

  • contribute to raising citizens’ awareness on the damages that current urban mobility trends generate on the environment and the quality of life;

  • establish performing partnerships with local stakeholders;

  • be part of a Europe wide campaign, sharing a common goal and a common identity with other towns and cities;

  • emphasize the local commitment towards sustainable urban transport policies;

  • launch new longer term policies and permanent measures.
The main aim of the European Mobility Week is to promote public awareness of the need to act against pollution caused by the increase in motorised traffic in urban environment.
EU involvement
Three partners have gathered to form the European Mobility Week core consortium: EUROCITIES, Energie-Cités and Climate Alliance. The Mobility Week was created with the political and financial support of the European Commission.
The consortium cooperates with representatives from national ministries and agencies, European and international associations and organisations.
