Trendsetter - Setting Trends for Sustainable Urban Mobility
Introduction
Trendsetter was a four-year EU collaboration between five European cities -  Stockholm, Graz, Pecs, Prague & Lille - concluded in January 2006. The project involved 54 individual projects, all of which aimed to; improve mobility, quality of life, air quality, and reduce noise and traffic congestion.
Description
Trendsetter was a cooperation between five European cities; Graz, Lille, Pecs, Prague and Stockholm. All in all, 20 organisations, around 300 persons and 175 subcontractors were involved in the work to realise each of the measures in the project.
Trendsetter was split into two parallel and simultaneous project structures:
One was city-oriented with different types of measures integrated into a dynamic local mixture. In each city a local manager acted as coordinator.
The other level was thematic. Trendsetter integrated eight thematic fields: access restrictions, integrated pricing strategies, public passenger transport, new forms of vehicle use, distribution of goods, soft measures, transport management systems, and clean public and private fleets. For each theme, related measures in different cities were gathered for the exchange of information and experience, agreement on common methods and acting together on various issues, etc. Each theme had a project, or work-package, leader.
Teams working on dissemination and evaluation also existed, with participation from each city.
Results
The projects of Trendsetter were sorted in eight workpachages and several subthemes:
  • Access Restrictions
  • Integrated Pricing Strategies
  • Public Transport
  • Goods Distribution
  • Soft measures
  • New forms of vehicle use
  • Transport Management
  • Clean Vehicles and Fuels
The evaluation of the 54 sub-projects showed that traffic problems can be solved using relatively small measures in the urban picture. Emissions fell and urban environments became safer and more flexible for pedestrians and drivers. One of the experiences gained through the project was that cities taking a large slice of the responsibility for future development represents an effective approach.
