Building Culture Report
Introduction
Survey of essential fields of action of building culture in the 21st century
Description
The research activities aim at identifying and analysing the essential fields of action of building culture in the 21st century and at presenting exemplary approaches of action. The system-related conditions and ways of functioning of building and design in important market segments were analysed and confronted with building culture requirements.
Background information
The Architecture and Building Culture Initiative provided the basis for a broad discussion of the structural change of the planning professions and their social tasks. The research activities served to establish the discussion.
Conclusions
The wide range of building culture activities in Germany is analysed and illustrated by means of a variety of examples. Priorities of building culture activities include the protection of the urban white land, a high quality of public areas as well as a large understanding of the design quality also regarding transport and technical infrastructure and commercial buildings. Furthermore, recommendations are directed towards planning cultures, i.e. to communication and processes leading to a sound design of the built environment. Demands to a national building culture policy are also formulated.
