Manual for Listed Buildings
Introduction
The manual defines the buildings considered, describes the restoration approval process, presents the national incentives scheme for historic building rehabilitation, and provides detailed guidelines for conservation work.
Description
The document is actually a citizen’s guide through government conservation policy for non-monumental historic buildings, i.e. mostly examples of vernacular architecture dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.  It defines architectural heritage and lists the basic principles of conservation.  It also explains the legal procedures related to the preservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings, including permission requirements for conservation work as well as a detailed description of the available package of financial incentives for restoration work.  The document is accompanied by substantial appendices including basic guidelines concerning conservation work carried out on traditional structural systems, wall and roof constructions, flooring, doors, windows and other architectural elements, colours, courtyards, signage, electromechanical systems, permissible internal alterations and external additions etc. These are illustrated throughout with examples to convey the basic principles of good practice.
