Energie-Cités, promoting local sustainable energy policies

Introduction

Energie-Cités is an association of European local authorities for promotion of local sustainable energy policies. This network has over 130 members in 21 countries, representing almost 300 towns and cities.

Description

About 75% of all energy consumption in Europe occurs in urban areas. Therefore local authorities play an important role in establishing innovative energy policies.

Taking action at local level can help to:

reduce energy consumption while reducing local emissions and effluents;
stimulate local growth by making use of locally available resources;
be recognised as an innovative town or city.

Participants

Almost 300 towns and cities participate in the Energie-Cités network. A complete list of participants can be found by clicking on the “Partners of Energie-Cités” link in the Link section at the bottom of this page.

Objectives

Energie-Cités has the following objectives:

to develop initiatives through exchange of experiences, the transfer of know how and the organisation of joint projects;
to allow partners to benefit from shared expertise in local energy strategies;
to strengthen its partners’ role and skills in the sphere of energy efficiency, in the promotion of renewable and decentralised energy sources and in protection of the environment;
to influence the policies and proposals made by European Union institutions in the fields of energy, environmental protection and urban policy.

Membership of Energie-Cités means you can:

receive a newsletter twice a month;
attend conferences, training sessions and technical visits at reduced prices;
exchange experiences with other municipalities;
be involved in projects supported by the European Commission;
promote their actions and experiences via a European-wide network;
meet with other European stakeholders;
take part in lobbying initiatives;
have a permanent representation in Brussels as well as the use of a meeting room;
benefit from the network’s expertise and assistance in organising international conferences in their town or city.
