Ecologically Safe Everyday (EKOARKI)-project
Introduction
The purpose of the project is to increase awareness of ecological way of life, support environmental education work and to offer possibilities for practical environmental acts.
Problem
How to promote the sustainability of the living environment by involving citizens?
Description
The project´s fundamental idea is to improve the living environment of the residents by promoting sustainable development in resident activity. Project is part of EU Urban II Community Initiative Programme.
Approach
The goals of the project are achieved through five operation units:
  • operation teams, eg. dweller based “clubs” supporting ecologically sustainable way of life;
  • courses and training eg. encouragement towards a sustainable way of life at home and at work, hiking, care for own living environment, working with own hands; 
  • environmental counselling and education about any topic for schools, day care centres, play parks, youth centres, residents’ associations, tenants’ committees;
  • recycling and shared use services for everyone in need- communication and sharing of experiences.
Results
The desire and capacity of the residents, educators and other actors in the area to act in an ecologically more sustainable manner has increased.
Beneficiaries
Residents of the eastern Helsinki area.
