Towards Sustainable Urban Transport Policies – Recommendations for Local Authorities
Introduction
SMILE analysed local policies and drafted recommendations for local authorities to facilitate the replication of successful practices.
Description
SMILE aimed to reduce the negative impact of urban transport on air quality, climate, and environmental noise, and improve the quality of life, by promoting and developing sustainable mobility initiatives. The initiative capitalised on the results of the “In town without my car!”. SMILE encouraged citizens to develop new mobility behaviour; promoted innovative good practices in cities; addressed citizens concerns regarding environmental noise; developed 10 urban mobility demonstration projects.
Background information
The purpose of the research is to provide local authorities with recommendations on how to develop effective and sustainable urban transport policies.
Conclusions
SMILE currently supports local authorities by presenting 170 successful and replicable practices for sustainable urban mobility in its local experiences database (www.smile-europe.org). The analysis of such experiences cy cities and towns, as well as by researchers, lead to drafting recommendations for local authorities on the development of sustainable urban transport policies.
