ScanBalt, BioRegion
Introduction
In the ScanBalt BioRegion a number of regional networks exists between universities, industries, hospitals, public institutions and other important actors within the life science arena. The region therefore constitutes an excellent foundation for the promotion of closer interregional and cross-national cooperation. The aims of these regional networks are the basis of ScanBalt.
Description
ScanBalt is a mediating and coordinating non-profit association deriving its strength from the networks and organisations it represents. ScanBalt brings together regional and national expertise into one coherent, transnational, organisation.
In order to meet meta-regional needs and increase competitiveness within life sciences ScanBalt promotes:
  • knowledge formation
  • education & research
  • technology transfer
  • innovation
  • economic development.
ScanBalt believes that life sciences have a major potential to contribute positively to health, welfare and prosperity. The exploitation of life sciences and the promotion of growth must be conducted in tandem with a dialogue between science and society. ScanBalt promotes such a dialogue.
Sustainable development is, in the same sense, an overarching objective for ScanBalt. Thus the development and application of life sciences must take place in a way which is healthy to citizens and the environment and is consistent with common fundamental values and ethical principles. The development of ScanBalt BioRegion requires that these values are respected and that all involved parties will benefit while working together towards the same goals.
Participants
The ScanBalt BioRegion has partners in:
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Latvia

For a more detailed overview of the network’s partner in each country, please click on the “ScanBalt partners” link at the bottom of this page.
Objectives
The objectives of ScanBalt are:
  • to create corporate identity for ScanBalt BioRegion;
  • to develop visibility for ScanBalt BioRegion and the members of ScanBalt;
  • to attract human, industrial and financial resources;
  • to coordinate joint efforts in research, education, technology transfer, innovation and economic development;
  • to provide a platform to facilitate dialogue and collaboration between networks, academia, hospitals, public authorities, private companies and individuals;
  • to create a platform to facilitate dialogue with supra-national institutions.
Products
  • ScanBalt acts as both an umbrella and a platform for transnational projects according to simple guidelines approved by the ScanBalt Executive Committee. ScanBalt has facilitated the raising of approximately 4 million Euros for its members since 2002. Projects either focus on the development of meta-regional infrastructure in the ScanBalt BioRegion or on a specific theme.
  • ScanBalt publishes position papers on subjects which affect its members, and the ScanBalt BioRegion.
  • ScanBalt Forum is a platform for the coordination of existing activities and the initiation of new ones. ScanBalt Forum promotes a dialogue with regional, national and supranational decision makers and facilitates new fund raising activities.
EU involvement
ScanBalt is partially funded by The European Commission under the Sixth Framework Programme.
The ScanBalt Campus project is partially financed by the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) within the INTERREG III B Neighbourhood Programme.
