Tackling climate change at the local level - Madrid
Introduction
A ‘green’ customer loyalty card, a floating climate campus, and an ecological public transport fleet are all new sustainably-focused initiatives that have been taken up by the cities of Belfast, Rotterdam and Madrid, respectively. The three cases were presented at the EUROCITIES workshop, ‘Carbon-Neutral Cities: The Way Forward’, on 12 February during the European Union Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2009.
Problem
The main problem that was the focus in the case of Madrid was the close relation between road transport and environmental pollution and the relation between road transport and negative health effects.
Description
Green Fleet and Foro Proclima
Madrid has targeted the corporate sector by means of a discussion forum, ‘Foro Proclima’, to tackle climate change at the local level. Companies involved realise the contribution that they can make, through innovation and exchange of good practice, towards improving and promoting sustainable development values. Forum participants aim to reduce the vehicle emissions of their fleets by reaching a goal of 6% of clean vehicles by 2011.
Approach
In Madrid, initiatives have been launched to tackle the negative effects of road transport. This has resulted in an increased usage of clean vehicles and a commitment by the city to gradually increase the role and usage of clean vehicles e.g. buses, waste collection vehicles, and cars, which are operated by the local official administration. The city aims to have a completely ‘ecological’ or energy efficient fleet using environmentally friendly technologies by 2011.
