British Council launches European climate programme
Introduction
The British Council recently launched the European element of its global climate programme: 'Challenge Europe'. This European campaign aims to make an impact on the climate change debate and accelerate change to a Low Carbon future. The project involves a team of 220 young professionals in 15 European countries, so-called Climate Advocates, who are tasked to create new and creative ideas to cut carbon emissions. The British Council will work closely together with various partner organisations from the corporate, non-governmental, environmental and academic sector.
Description
The 'Challenge Europe' campaign of the British Council aims to create momentum through collaboration, innovation, understanding and knowledge-sharing. The campaign was officially launched in June 2008 and is taking place in 15 different countries:
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Hungary
  • Ireland
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom
  • Ukraine
In each of these 15 countries 15-20 young professionals, aged 18-35, are working together as ‘Climate Advocates’ to create new ways to reduce carbon use or utilise methods already found but not yet properly exploited. Each group offers a broad representation of skills, attitudes and ideas from all walks of life, working across disciplines to create new ideas and concepts. In the end, the Climate Advocates should come up with 40 concrete ideas which can be developed into real projects. 'Challenge Europe' will run for three years.
