Monitoring System on Urban Quality of Life (MSUQL)
Introduction
This is a tool for municipal activity used to increase knowledge regarding the current status of the quality of life in the city of Porto. The aim is to focus on monitoring a set of factors which, directly or indirectly, influence living conditions in an urban centre.
Problem
Given that several of the domains of the Quality of Life monitored within the scope of this Project do not come under the Municipality’s direct or exclusive responsibility, this is a basic platform for discussing urban problems and for developing joint strategies for Porto, involving the different socio-economic and institutional actors and the general population.
Description
Monitoring a set of factors which influence the living conditions in an urban centre (job supply, cultural events, etc.), by regularly collecting, processing, analysing and publishing quantitative data. This permanent information infrastructure allows for the detection and measurement of trends, some of which detract from the quality of life in the City and require strategies to offset them, and others which have a positive impact that should be encouraged by the various policies.
Approach
Development of a permanent information infrastructure, will deepen the knowledge of the situation in the city of Porto interms of quality of life, as well as detect and measure developing trends over time.
Results
Collecting information pertaining to how the citizens perceive their quality of life in the City is another of this System’s major objectives. Direct surveys of the inhabitants are carried out periodically, so that an objective evaluation of developing trends can be compared with the degree of satisfaction expressed by residents, on a regular basis.The indicators of the quality of life could be compared to other reference ratings: the Metropolitan Area of Porto, the whole of Portugal, other European cities.
