München, Isar-Plan
Introduction
Inner-city recreational landscape on the river developed based on the renaturation of a part of the river.
Problem
  • Improvement of flood protection;
  • increase of the naturalness of the river landscape;
  • restoration of ecological functions;
  • enhancement of the Isar bank for leisure and recreation purposes of the urban population;
  • improvement of the water quality;
  • increase of the residual flow.
Description
Within the urban area of Munich, a part of the river Isar with 6 km in length was substantially restructured, renaturated and recovered for the nature-oriented leisure and recreational use of the urban population. The nature-oriented redesign is planned to be gradually continued.
Approach
An interdisciplinary working group of the city council has prepared a renaturation concept under the responsibility of the local water management office which also considers the results of a detailed poll of citizens. The so-called “Isar Plan” combines flood protection with the restoration of a near-natural river landscape and the improvement of the leisure and recreation quality in the river bank zone.
Results
A part of a strongly regulated river course in the inner-city has been redesigned thus making a near-natural area available again to the metropolitan population. At the same time flood protection was ensured and a contribution to environmental protection was made.
Resources used
Interdisciplinary planning and implementation, intensive civic participation, special know-how in terms of the environment and water engineering.
