Planning policies for sustainable building: guidance for local development frameworks – UK
Introduction
Guidance on how to integrate benchmarks for sustainable building, the design and construction of buildings and their sites, into local development frameworks.
Description
The document provides advice on how the new system of local development frameworks can address sustainable building, by using the policy directions contained in planning policy statements (PPS) and regional spatial strategies (RSS). Sustainable building is defined as the environmental design and construction of buildings and sites, to meet the government's overarching environmental objectives to reduce resource use and environmental impact.
The guidance discusses the critical success factors for adoption of policies and for policy implementation. It includes a series of texts and references that provide potential content for development plan documents (DPDs) and spatial planning documents (SPDs). Policy approaches are suggested for:
  • design and construction practice
  • carbon emissions
  • water
  • material efficiency in construction
  • household and commercial recycling
  • environmental protection and enhancement
  • adaptation to climate change
