Small Town Sustainability provides a glimpse of a sustainable future
Introduction
Many large cities have taken initiatives to make their economy, environment and equity in society more sustainable. However, the answer to a lot of sustainability questions may actually be provided by smaller urban places. The book 'Small Town Sustainability', written by Paul L. Knox and Heike Mayer, provides a glimpse of a sustainable future from a small-town perspective. The two authors explore how citizens, planners, architects and policymakers in small towns work together towards a sustainable future for all. The book makes use of many case studies and pictures to illustrate its message: "although small towns are challenged to find a place in the global economy, they have environmental, cultural and economic assets they can use in developing their futures."
Description
Small towns have been greatly influenced by global developments. Global economic interdependence and reorganisation have destablised many local economies and made them more dependent on external factors. Large cities have increasingly started to look the same. But so have small towns.
'Small Town Sustainability' gives an overview of small towns that have been successful at creating a more sustainable future for themselves. The book looks at issues of sustainability such as environmental sustainability, sustainability by design, sustainable economies, creativity and culture and equity.
In the final chapter the book provides a conclusion of what works and what doesn't in the strive towards small town sustainability.
Conclusions
According to the authors there are four essential questions concerning long-term sustainability that small towns should consider:
  • How to maintain the town's sociocultural characteristics in an era of rapid change?
  • How to critically assess progress made in the field of sustainability?
  • How to provide equal opportunities and standards for all in relation to for example income, health, education and housing?
  • How to change citizens' social values so that the town can become more sustainable?
