Urban Ecology Project – Aalborg, DK
Introduction
The aim of this urban ecology project was to demonstrate that it was possible, despite a modest municipal budget, to realise ambitious ecology pilot projects calling on limited financial resources.
Problem
Thanks to the "Clean city – Green city" campaign, citizens, associations and industries have long been socially aware of the importance of the ecology and the energy, and are actively involved in these fields.
With regard to the town planning, the city council has chosen a programme of actions comprising different measures aiming at a sustainable and ecological development.
Description
The pilot-project consists of four blocks, built at the turn of the century, and the Public Louise Square, located in the centre of the area to renovate. The re-organisation of Louise Square plays an essential role in the urban renovation project because it is the central place of the district and it gives an exceptional visibility to the ecology measures undertaken.
A total of six sub-projects have been completed:
  • The Green Space
  • The Blue House
  • The Yellow House
  • The New Ecology Construction frame concept
  • The Public Spaces frame concept
  • The Retrofitting frame concept
Approach
The Green Space
The purpose of the Green Space is to improve the surroundings and green qualities of the Danmarksgade neighbourhood and to insure the overall unity of the urban ecology project.
The Yellow House
The objective is to reduce the energy consumption (heating, hot water for individual use, ventilation and electricity) by 30%.
The Blue House
The goal is to separate the domestic water, according to its quality, and to reduce the drinking water consumption and the level of used waters to 30%.
The New Ecology Construction frame concept
A twenty-six unit social housing was built after demolition of the old buildings, which were in such a bad condition that a refurbishment was impossible. The intention had been to erect a sound house with environment-friendly materials.
The Public Spaces frame concept
The concept is formed as a catalogue of proposals and ideas which examine, element by element, the content of a common open space with inspiration and suggestions for new solutions covering vegetation, grounds, buildings furniture, management and maintenance. Four ecological open spaces have been completed during the project.
The Retrofitting frame concept
The purpose of the frame concept is to introduce as many ecological and environmental-friendly, technically tested and financially viable measures in urban renewal.
Results
The project shows how an old urban area can be renewed while respecting resources and ecological criteria. While using the latest technology, the project intended to get a clear ecological message across and to be of a high architectural standard. The behaviour of users has also been taken into account as a central aspect of the project. Experience shows that the residents of the pilot-projects participate actively in getting new technologies to work.
