Dessau - Dessauer Weg
Introduction
Revitalisation of old industrialised sites instead of commercial settlements in the white land
Problem
Revitalisation of brownfields; marketing of commercial areas in the inner city; strengthening of the inner city as a business location; prevention of expansion outwards
Description
In view of the profound structural changes in the city and its grave consequences the City of Dessau focuses on the revitalisation of brownfields. The “Dessau Method” is a double strategy: On the one hand, it means to immediately reuse the arising industrial wasteland by means of different measures. On the other hand, it aims at avoiding commercial settlements in the white land.
Approach
The revitalisation projects were implemented by concerted administrative action. The city acquires wasteland in the inner city based on a stocktaking and a conception for further use developed by the local urban planning office. Following the development and parcelling, the properties are marketed at favourable conditions. The business development section of the urban planning office focuses urban activities.
Results
In re-using brownfields the city was able to concentrate investments on inner city areas thus overcoming urban development problems and avoiding further land consumption. The revitalisation projects give important impetus to the inner city development of Dessau. The constructive cooperation between founders of a company, the association of industrial parks and the city helped to speed up the cleanup operation, the development of new sites and parcelling considerably.
