The paper, as part of the COST 10 Conference, explains the evolution of town planning in Cyprus, the series of bi-communal projects which are used as tools to building bridges between the two ethnic communities of Cyprus and the major issues (problems and opportunities) of the Nicosia Urban Area within the context of governance, dynamics and structures. It presents the Nicosia Urban Area as a case study for the Conference and outlines the key areas of the discussion by the Action’s delegates.

As part of COST Action C10 (Outskirts of European Cities)

Identification and analysis of the issues relating to outskirts and policy  recommendations by means of study visits and analysis of published material.

Main features and problems of the Nicosia Urban Area were identified, including suburban sprawl, scattered residential development on the urban fringe, lack of a well-defined edge of the settlement, lack of urban design and lack of comprehensive system of open spaces.
