Aylesham Masterplan
Introduction
This case study describes one of the most successful comprehensive examples of producing a Masterplan for a substantial urban extension with the full and creative involvement of key stakeholders including local residents.
Problem
The area was identified as offering opportunities for substantial urban extension – it was important for regeneration agencies and local authorities to seize initiative and create something of quality and ensure stakeholders had the opportunity to be fully involved in the process.
Description
This case study describes the process for the development of the Aylesham Masterplan using the Enquiry by Design method to secure full and creative involvement of key stakeholders, including local residents, in the masterplanning process.
Approach
  • After the local plan marked Aylesham for urban expansion a partnership was formed by regeneration agencies and local authorities to seize the initiative and create something of quality.
  • A masterplanning team was then appointed and a background briefing prepared.
  • The Enquiry by Design method was selected to ensure creativity, quality and involvement.
  • Two workshops were held plus another workshop for key stakeholders.
  • Following these events a draft plan was presented at a public meeting.
  • An independent public consultation team was then appointed and a public consultation on the draft followed.
  • The masterplan was revised and then formally adopted in 2004.
Results
One of the most successful comprehensive examples of producing a Masterplan for a substantial urban extension with the full and creative involvement of key stakeholders including local residents.
