The urban explosion: present and future of the metropolis
Introduction
The city, like all human society, is an ecosystem, and like all ecosystems it interchanges material, energy and information with the environment which hosts its.  These are the terms of the current urban debate, a debate held by the first International Congress on Territory and the City: the present and future metropolis”. A virtual congress held at the Centre de Política de Suelo y Valoraciones (CPSV), of the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC), between 2 June and 11 July 2003. This edition of the magazine CIUDAD y TERRITORIO, Territorial studies, groups together eight essays presented to the congress.
Description
In its research section, the magazine presents eight texts investigating the evidence and hypotheses on the shape of the informational city, metropolitan regions and imagined communities, large Spanish cities at the dawn of the XXI century, governability in the metropolitan area of the Valle de México, a new approach for new territoriality, intermediate cities between specific areas and cities and global spaces, forecasts relating to the Valencia labour market, Spain and the city of the future: towards a universal pantopolis?. The texts are accompanied by the regular property sections, correspondence, documentation and books and reviews, which include accumulated indices of magazines published during 2004.
Conclusions
When viewing the city as an ecosystem, the stubborn neglect of implacable laws of thermodynamics and, more specifically, its well know second principle, the increasing production of entropy, could become an irreversible folly. We only possess the natural “capital” that we inherited, and wasting it as our current urban lives do not only demonstrates a selfishness that could well be considered an extinction of “public wealth”, but also our own limitation as a species.
