The Nicosia Master Plan: A bi-communal urban development and regeneration project
Introduction
Nicosia Master Plan is a bi-communal project concerned with the revitalisation, historic conservation and future development of Nicosia.
Problem
The development and enhancement of an atmosphere of mutual confidence, trust and respect between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, the regeneration  and preservation of the architectural heritage of the Walled City of Nicosia
Description
The document describes the origins, aims and achievements of the Nicosia Master Plan. Its objectives are to bring together members of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities, to work jointly in the preparation and implementation of bi-communal projects, to support the rehabilitation of the Walled City of Nicosia and the conservation of its architectural and cultural heritage, according to the policies and provisions of the Nicosia Master Plan, to sensitize Nicosia residents to conservation issues and the importance of their shared heritage and to mobilize them towards these goals and to improve the living environment of the residents of Nicosia neighbourhoods.
Approach
The Programme brings together members of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, to work jointly in the preparation and implementation of projects based on the bi-communally planned Nicosia Master Plan.
Results
The key results include the close cooperation between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, the joint development and parallel implementation of rehabilitation activities and infrastructure improvement projects in the walled city that support the conservation of architectural and cultural heritage, raising awareness regarding the value of architectural heritage, the stimulation of privately funded restoration and the upgrading of the living environment in various areas of the Walled City.

Resources used
The Nicosia Master Plan is a collaboration of the Nicosia Municipalities and the Town Planning and Housing Department. The office responsible for the implementation and review of the Nicosia Master Plan consists of architects, town planners, civil engineers, and sociologists. The project is funded by USAID, UNDP and EU Partnership for the Future Programme.
