Bahn.Ville – railway-based settlement development and transport networking in German and French regions
Introduction
The German-French Bahn.Ville cooperation project served to analyse the importance of an integration of settlement and transport planning based on present experiences in Germany and France.
Proposition
The comparative study of German and French examples was carried out to present the advantages and disadvantages of implemented approaches to settlement and transport development and to derive recommendations for local authorities, intermunicipal cooperations as well as transport companies and associations.
Description
The Bahn.Ville research project analysed the interactions and the coordination of spatial planning and the development of regional railway transport. This was done based on best practices. Transferable lessons have been identified for a railway-based settlement development. Within a second project phase reference areas were selected to explore the practical use and transferability of the research results.
Background information
Bahn.ville was realised in the framework of the German-French cooperation DEUFRAKO. 8 project partners from Germany and France in total participate in the project. This was done in the context of the fact that the strengthening of railway transport and the connection between urban development and railway transport forms an important part of the current discussions about the sustainable development of cities and their transport modes.
Methodology
The comparative study of German and French examples analysed the interaction between settlement development and railway transport. This was done based on best practices. Within a second project phase reference areas were selected to explore the practical use and transferability of the research results.
Knowledge dissemination
The results were published on the website www.bahn-ville.net and in a manual. A study trip, an expert workshop as well as final colloquia in Germany and France were carried out.
Conclusions
Transferable lessons have been identified for a railway-based settlement development. The project has provided recommendations and methodical information to local authorities and other partners for a successful railway-based settlement development at regional level.
