The guide provides advice on intensive urban development, ranging from large urban extensions to the development of small infill plots. It attempts to help deliver a consistently higher standards of environmentally and contextually sensitive design within Essex. Focuses on two categories of advice:

influences upon quality - public space, private space, activity and buildings
influences upon sustainability - spatial criteria, buildings and site criteria, and community criteria.
