Preparing design codes: a practice manual - UK
Introduction
A guide which shows how design codes can help deliver good quality places, and which explains how design coding as a process can be integrated into the planning, design and development processes that shape the built environment.
Description
The practice manual provides guidance on the role of design codes in achieving high quality, well designed places. It sets out the appropriate circumstances for the use of codes, how they should be written, adopted and managed, and the necessary inputs in terms of skills and resources to ensure successful outcomes. It discusses the various stages involved:
  • initiating a design coding process
  • coordinating inputs into the design coding process
  • appraising the local context for design coding
  • designing and testing the design code
  • formalising the design code
  • implementing the design code
  • managing design code compliance
It also includes annexes on using design codes in conjunction with local development orders, a summary of the design coding process, and a glossary of terms used.
