Converting an industrial site – Cácares, ES
Introduction
With funding from the URBAN II programme, the city of Cácares is converting a disused industrial site into a training, leisure and culture facility for the local community and a workspace for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Problem
The focus of the URBAN II programme in Cácares is the Calerizo neighbourhood. Unemployment in this area is 9.4%, which is considerably higher than the city average, and it is characterised by problems of on-going depopulation, a deteriorating urban environment and social and economic exclusion.
Description
The conversion of the industrial site will considerably improve the availability of social, training and cultural facilities for the local community. The area surrounding the site will be developed as a green space. The project also stimulates SMEs to settle in the area.
A noteworthy aspect of the project is the adherence to the highest environmental and sustainability standards: buildings will be equipped with solar energy panels, use recycled rainwater and incorporate sewage purification systems. The project will act as a model of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Results
No definite results have been published. The project will be evaluated at the end of its implementation phase.
EU involvement
The total cost of the project is 5.5 million euros.
The URBAN II programme of the European Commission provided 4.1 million euros.
