Plan to revitalize Chicago’s historic downtown - USA
Introduction
Chicago's historic downtown core, comprised of State Street, Wabash Avenue, and Michigan Avenue, is as much a part of the city's future as its past. To ensure that ongoing revitalization projects along the streets by the public and private sectors adequately address the area's unique characteristics, the Department of Planning and Development, along with consultants and neighborhood groups, drafted “A Vision for State Street, Wabash Avenue and Michigan Avenue.” Released in 2000, the plan addresses development issues in the East Loop involving businesses, academic and cultural institutions, retailers, restaurants, hotels and other factors.
Description
If investment decisions in this area are to be made wisely, the public and private sectors must share a clearly articulated understanding of what they hope to achieve. Accordingly, having consulted with the local business community and other interested parties, the City of Chicago offers the plan to revitalize Chicago’s historic downtown core.
The plan comprises the following elements:
  • Introduction and Overview
  • Infrastructure and Upper Floors
  • Retail and Academic Core
  • Historic Properties and Parking
  • Open Space and Design Guidelines
  • Next Steps
