The Genova workshop
Introduction
The Genova workshop dealt with the issues of economic inclusion, including issues of education, skills and economic development.
Description
The socio metrex project demonstrates the balance between the labour market and the regional economic base within metropolitan regions and areas based on the experience and practice of the  partners.
Background information
The project goal is to bring together practitioners in metropolitan spatial planning and development in a series of expert group workshops to identify, through case study experience, the specific ways in which the strategic planning process can contribute to social sustainability and integrated urban social, economic and environmental sustainability can be achieved.
EU involvement
In order to promote and foster networking METREX meets biannually, holds a conference biennially and its activities include expert groups working on issues of common interest and projects within European Commission Programmes.
Conclusions
Priority action in favour of specific groups:
• protection of the aged;
• dysfunctions in the labour market;
• communities struck by natural disasters;
• exclusion related to physical condition. The relationship between
    exclusion, health and disability;
• Vulnerable population groups with particular characteristics.
   employment, education and medical care for repatriates, immigrants
   and refugees;
• special consideration of families with children and the prevention of
   new forms of illiteracy (the digital divide).
Instruments of employment policy:
• Regional Operational Programmes. To promote equal opportunities for
   men and women, strengthen local employment initiatives, promote
   integrated interventions for urban development and develop human
   resources;
• Local Action Plans for Employment. In areas of high unemployment or in
   areas with a high concentration of vulnerable groups;
• Development Partnerships (Community initiative - EQUAL) Powerful        and binding agreements between various agencies (public and private).
