Urban Italia: experiences of complex programming in Italy, IT
Introduction
The main objective of the Urban Italia Programme is to promote, at national level, the successful models of integrated development elaborated within the framework of the URBAN Community Initiative.
Description
The main goals of URBAN ITALIA are:
  • producing innovative strategies for the sustainable regeneration of small/medium sized towns or urban areas within large cities
  • promoting the development and exchange of knowledge and experience on sustainable urban development in the European Union.
The financed activities are
  • the cities’ renewal through the development of multifunctional urban environment
  • the support to self employment and new business
  • the fight against social exclusion and support to equal opportunities
  • the creation of integrated public transport systems
  • the environment development
  • the development of innovative information services for citizens and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
  • the urban management practice improvement.
The cities involved in URBAN Italia Programme are implementing some models of integrated development. These models will help the cities to overcome difficulties which are often similar to those experienced in other European countries. Other players involved in the partnerships established by URBAN ITALIA include: Local Councils, Public Administrative Bodies, Provincial and Regional Administrations. This Programme is funded by the Italian Government with a total amount of €103.3 million euros. Each Programme receives € 5.16 million euros.
EU involvement
The European Union is progressively paying particular attention to the role of cities as source of development (regional, national and European) and engine to growth and job opportunity in the regions. Within this context the URBAN Italia Programme follows the innovative aspects of the Community Initiative Programme (CIP) Urban II. URBAN Italia tackles the urban issues with an integrated approach, implementing interventions for the local economic development and for the promotion of social integration.
