Auswertung des Bundeswettbewerb "Stadtumbau Ost" - für lebenswerte Städte und attraktives Wohnen
Introduction
Systematic evaluation and processing of the Federal contest "Stadtumbau Ost" to support the practical implementation and the public
Description
In 2002, the Federal Government carried out the contest „"Stadtumbau Ost - für lebenswerte Städte und attraktives Wohnen" (Urban Restructuring in East Germany – for livable cities and attractive housing) to give impetus to the required planning process in local authorities. The contest, which involved 260 Eastern German towns and cities and ten urban districts of Berlin, awarded 34 prizes in total. Towns and cities had been asked to develop integrated urban development concepts with innovative solutions for urban restructuring in their relevant cities by means of financial assistance of the Federal Government. These concepts now form the basis to implement and put urban restructuring into concrete terms. The insights gained by the contest contributions have been systematically evaluated and published to support the activities.
In October 2001, the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing invited tenders for the contest „"Stadtumbau Ost - für lebenswerte Städte und attraktives Wohnen" (Urban Restructuring in East Germany – for livable cities and attractive housing). In the first phase of the programme “Stadtumbau Ost” (Urban Restructuring in East Germany) the contest aimed at developing innovative and realisable solutions for urban restructuring. 260 Eastern German towns and cities and ten urban districts of (eastern) Berlin were selected by the Federation and the Länder for participation. A characteristic of the contest was that participation was already worth while: Depending on their size the participating towns and cities were funded by up to 125,000 euros to produce integrated urban restructuring concepts. The contest ended in September 2002 with the awarding of prizes for 34 urban restructuring concepts. The contest was successful as the participating towns and cities as well as the public could be won for the new urban restructuring task. The contributions to the contest also included a large range of data and qualitative statements on urban restructuring strategies, which later were systematically and comparatively evaluated. The results were documented in the present brochure to support further activities.
