Rotterdam: Development of the Zaagmolenkade
Introduction
The Zaagmolenkade lies on the river de Rotte, from which Rotterdam gets its name. Up to now the river has only been marginally included in the living environment. By redeveloping the Zaagmolenkade this will be changed.
Problem
The aim of the project is to develop the quay as a boulevard and to use it for public functions, by adapting the look of the Zaagmolenkade and the street adjacent to the Zonneplein.
Description
The input from the Urban II subsidy will allow the neighbourhood to direct its attention to the river. The quay will have the character of a boulevard, with minimum traffic and parking.
Approach
The spearheads within the Rotterdam URBAN II programme document are:
  • Integrated approach of youth problems (family, education, leisure time, work).
  • Investments in culture and economy; the Cultural world district.
  • Complete improvement of the quality of the outdoors area in the territory.
  • Economical-recreative (re-)development of the Rotte and its surroundings.
  • Participation of inhabitants and entrepreneurs with the driving Thea terras.
Results
The changes will greatly enhance the living, working and recreational environment in this neighbourhood. Its drawing powers will be increased, so that entrepreneurs will be more willing to locate to the area around the Zaagmolenkade.
EU involvement
URBAN II is an initiative of the European Commission. The aim is to support innovative projects in the field of urban regeneration in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The URBAN II projects will set an example for national urban policy. In the Netherlands, areas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Heerlen have been allocated for the period 2000-2006. In Rotterdam URBAN II attention is directed at three neighbourhoods in 'Noord aan de Rotte', with a total of almost 30,000 inhabitants.
Financing
European subsidy: € 802.249
Total cost: € 2.782.681
