Self diagnostic tool helps planners assess skills and capacity
Introduction
In order to help planners around the world assess skills and capacity,  the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Lincoln Institute created a 'self diagnostic tool'. The organisations believe effective planning demands better resourced, more knowledgeable and innovative institutions, communities and individuals. Therefore it is crucial to first find out what capacity exists at present, where the most serious gaps are and to learn how capacity can be promoted most effectively.
Problem
What planning capacity exists in the world? Where are the most serious gaps? How can planning capacity be promoted most effectively?
Description
Anyone involved in planning in any country or territory can use the diagnostic tool. By planning, the organisations mean any involvement to the planning of human settlements, town or regional planning; zoning & land use; urban design; and environmental, economic, social, or infrastructure planning. The questions of the diagnostic tool are designed to take around half an hour to answer, although they may take longer. Once the self diagnosis is completed, one can visit the results site where there is a chance to view and comment on other entries and the subsequent analysis of them. A copy of one's own complete questionnaire can be provided on request to globalplanning@rtpi.org.uk
The self diagnostic tool is designed to help nations and territories compare themselves with nations and territories facing similar challenges. If you would like to receive a benchmarking report for your country, RTPI can also be contacted.
The questionnaire is available English, French and Spanish.
