Seven priorities to improve urban green space skills
Introduction
High quality parks and green spaces are crucial to life in cities. That is why the green space sector sector is of great importance to cities as well. However, according to CABE, the UK government's advisor on architecture, urban design and public space, the sector is facing difficult skills challenges. These range from problems with recruitment and retention of staff, to a shortage of leadership skills within the sector. The CABE report 'Skills to grow' looks at how these challenges can be tackled. It provides seven main priorities to improve urban green space skills that may create the conditions for an effective green space sector.
Description
According to CABE, the urban green space sector is facing certain important challenges. The main challenges are:
  • Problems with recruitment and retention of staff
  • A lack of workforce diversity and inclusion issues
  • Broader range of skills needed to meet new agendas
  • A shortage of green space management and leadership skills
  • Insufficient joint-up working in the sector
The seven priorities for the sector therefore include:
  • Increasing awareness of the sector and the opportunities it offers
  • Improve entry routes and career paths in sector occupations
  • Improving the availabililty and quality of training, including continuing professional development
  • Improve management and leadership skills
  • Increase the sector's overall investment in skills
  • Building capacity for joined-up thinking and working
  • Develop and maintain a strong evidence base
The CABE report was open to consultation until 12 November 2008.
