Great Neighbourhood Book shows how to create vital places
Introduction
Neighbourhoods form important units, especially according to PPS - the American nonprofit organisation 'Project for Public Spaces'. That is because it is in neighbourhoods that people interact most regularly and naturally, making it the perfect place for problem solving and creating local engagement. The 'Great Neighbourhood Book', published by PPS, was designed to inspire people to take on active role in their own community. It shows how to create great places where people can thrive and shares the most important lessons in the field of successful placemaking.
Description
According to PPS, the most important principles of placemaking are:
  1. The community is the expert;

  2. You are creating a place, not a design;

  3. You can't do it alone;

  4. They (government officials, business people) will always say that it can't be done;

  5. You can see a lot by just observing;

  6. Develop a vision;

  7. Form supports function;

  8. Make the connections;

  9. Start with petunias;

  10. Money is not the issue;

  11. You are never finished.
