Alternative approaches to neighbourhood management: six full case study reports - UK
Introduction
This research report presents case studies from current neighbourhood management initiatives in England.
Description
The report presents six detailed case studies of current neighbourhood management initiatives in England. It describes the findings of an evaluation of neighbourhood management in:
  • Poplar HARCA, Tower Hamlets;
  • North Benwell, Newcastle;
  • Gateshead;
  • Doncaster;
  • Haringey; and
  • Salford.
For each case study it looks at:
  • the background to the initiative, its objectives and how it operates;
  • the issues that have affected its development and performance;
  • evidence on its effectiveness and impact; and
  • any lessons that can be learned.
Background information
A national evaluation of the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit’s Pathfinder Programme of 35 neighbourhood management partnerships is being undertaken. To complement this work, the team has recently studied seven further neighbourhood management initiatives, outside of the Pathfinder Programme, to explore a wider range of neighbourhood management practices. The report looks at six of these initiatives.
Methodology
The case studies were selected to represent the range of practice being developed, each having been operational for at least two years. The research involved visiting the areas, interviewing participants and reviewing background documents.
Conclusions
Individual conclusions are drawn from each case study.
