Metropolis, World Association of Major Metropolises
Introduction
Metropolis is the World Association of Major Metropolises. Metropolis is also the metropolitan section of the United Cities & Local Government organization (UCLG).
Description
The mission of Metropolis is to promote international cooperation and knowledge exchanges among members, such as local and metropolitan governments. Metropolis is the spokesperson on cities' interests in international forums.
While metropolises are individually different, they share modern-day concerns on issues such as urban planning and development, economy, health, environmental matters, transport, infrastructure and communications.
The main goal of the association is to better control the development process of metropolitan areas in order to enhance the wellbeing of their citizens.
To do this, Metropolis represents regions and metropolitan areas at the worldwide level and is recognized as a major player by large international organizations such as the UN, WHO, the World Bank and others.
Participants
The Metropolis Association is represented by more than 90 member cities from across the world and operates as an international forum for exploring issues and concerns common to all big cities.

Objectives
The objectives of Metropolis are:
  • To increase of the exchange of knowledge, experiences and policies applied to shore up institutional capabilities among members and collaborators.
  • To strengthen the worldwide influence of metropolitan governments in collaboration with other local government associations, international organisations and civil society.
  • To extend the number of Metropolis members, seeking a balance between its international mission and regional initiatives.
Products
The Metropolis Association offers many opportunities for international cooperation. It provides a framework for the exchange of technical skills and for the development of relationships between member cities. Metropolis carries out many different activities. These include:
