EUKN National Focal Point in Finland: City of Helsinki Urban Facts
In each Member State, so-called National Focal Points assume the coordinating
tasks at national level and establish subnetworks within their countries
delivering knowledge input to EUKN. In Finland, the City of Helsinki Urban Facts
(Helsingin kaupungin tietokeskus) has been commissioned by the Ministry of the
Interior (Sisäasianministeriö) to assume the function of a National Focal Point.
One of the main tasks of the City of Helsinki Urban Facts as the National
Focal Point of Finland will be to organise model projects, research reports and
policies from the field of urban development and urban policy for the internet
platform of the European Urban Knowledge Network
http://www.eukn.org/. For
this purpose it is necessary to establish a national subnetwork involving all
relevant actors from the scientific, applied and political sector. On the
occasion of the kick-off conference of the Finland EUKN subnetwork on 26 August
2005 in Helsinki, various institutes, associations, local authorities and
scientists already declared their willingness to participate in the Network and
to provide input. The national Finnish network has been built up together with
The ministry of Interior, the 15 largest cities of Finland, reseach institututes
and other urban policy related organizations.
The City of Helsinki Urban Facts collects, analyses, stores and distributes
knowledge about past, present and future of Helsinki and its districts. The
Office is tasked with providing information products and information service to
ensure Helsinki remains a strategically active city aware of its present
situation and future challenges. The City of Helsinki Urban Facts consists of
four divisions: the Urban Research, The Statistics and Information Services
including the Library, the City Archives and Administration. The Unit for
Statistics and Information Services maintains and develops databases, produces
basic statistics, projections and thematic statistics, provides information
services and draws up comparisons between cities. The Urban Research Unit
conducts applied urban research for the administration of the City of Helsinki,
for the citizens and for enterprises located in Helsinki. The aim of the
research activity is to analyze contemporary urban phenomena from various
perspectives. Research and statistical areas include knowledge on population,
housing, living conditions, regional and municipal economy, business,
employment, city administration and civic participation, urban culture and urban
