Compete – sharing best practices in European city regions

Introduction
COMPETE is a European city-regional network aimed at sharing best practice on key factors influencing city competitiveness such as connectivity, the knowledge economy, quality of life and innovation.
Description
Compete will communicate experience and knowledge on how to raise the profile and performance of major regional cities to enable them to fulfil their potential as drivers of urban renaissance and economic competitiveness. Key partners in project are The European Institute for Urban Affairs at Liverpool John Moores University and the Office of the Prime Deputy Minister (UK).
A dynamic programme of transnational exchange and dissemination will be developed including showcasing events in which individual partner strategies on key themes of competitiveness are presented. The showcases are based on “learning by seeing”. The aim is to provide transferable models.
Drawing on the results of the Competitive European Cities Report (ODPM 2004), the partners will work together sharing experience and best practice on 5 key drivers relevant to the Lisbon competitiveness Agenda:
  • the knowledge economy and innovation;
  • human capital and supporting a skilled workforce;
  • city-region connectivity through good transport and ICT infrastructure;
  • quality of life and cultural development to support city renaissance;
  • governance and the importance of strategic capacity to implement long-term development of cities.
