Mundo - media education, training and work placements for immigrant and ethnic minority students

Introduction
The Mundo project creates new cultural know-how in the field of media, and promoting tolerance and multicultural understanding among employers and employees.
Description
The Mundo project promotes tolerance and understanding within a multicultural environment and increases positive attitudes towards immigrants and ethnic minorities amongst employers and in the labour market.
Students on this course will receive a wide ranging media education, including work placements in media organizations such as TV, radio, print newspapers, magazines and internet publications. Media employers and entrepreneurs will be consulted as part of the course with a view to creating future employment opportunities for course participants. The course will also design individual learning programmes for individual students, aimed at addressing the additional challenges they face in education and employment.
Approach
The project aims to provide students with the opportunity to produce their own weekly 10 minute slots within the Basaari television documentary series on current issues and events. This will be aimed at developing a permanent and regular programme format within the Finnish Broadcasting Company (Yle) TV1 schedule.
Target group
People with immigrant or ethnic minority background.
Results
The course increases the visibility and representation of immigrants and ethnic minorities in media employment and productions. After the two-year course it is also possible for the students to pass a competence test of "Further Qualification in Audiovisual Communication" or "Specialist Qualification in Audiovisual Communication".
Resources used
The Mundo project is a partnership lead by Yle. Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia will provide a course of class based media teaching. The Yle produced Basaari television series will provide work placements and technical and professional training in television production. Dream Catcher Ltd, the publishers of the multicultural Six Degrees magazine, will also provide work placement and training opportunities for students on the course.
