Possible roles of the metropolitan regions in the enhancement of the cohesion of the European Union, considering Lisbon process, challenge of increase competitiveness and the third cohesion report

Introduction
Metropolitan region, and city-regions are key actors in developing Hungary. Aftre ESDP ESPON nowadays focusing on metropolitan regions as well. Researchers put 3 main themes in their focus:
1. Regions and their tasks in Europe
2. Regions in Member States – success stories for building ont he potential of the city-development
3. Regions from inside – what problems are there, and what potentials could solve regional development
Description
The economic life is often considered as the competition of regions. The European Union is one of the big regions on earth, while it is also divided into sub-regions. The “region-approach” helps us in understanding trends, ideas, policies and also concrete decisions. The basic philosophy is that nowadays certain cities, firms can not be successful separately, only in co-operation with each-other in the region. Different region divisions can be made differing from the aspect (employment, investment, commuting, retail, language use, administration etc.), while these regions often do not follow national borders.
Background information
The understanding of regions is essential when trying to make the middle Europe region more competent. Hungary and the neighbouring countries can be considered as one region (“Visegrád Countires), while Hungary is also divided into sub-regions (Győr, Miskolc, Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs, and Budapest).
Conclusions
In Hungary Budapest as the capital city is considered European city. Its region is a unique region with problems and possibilities.
Building and strengthening policentricity is one of the main issues Hungary facing with int he near future.
