Lecce as linking node and cultural pole of the Salento area – Lecce, IT.

Introduction
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Lecce promotes the role of Lecce as linking node and cultural pole of the Salento (a peninsular region belonging to the South-eastern part of Apulia). The main objective of the S.I.S.Te.M.A. Lecce is to strengthen administrative partnerships among the three towns of Lecce, Brindisi and Taranto in order to connect them to the 1st and 8th European Corridors of the TEN networks and to the Motorways of the Sea.
Description
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Lecce’s main aim is to establish a tight cooperation between three important cities of the Apulia region in order to enhance the historical, cultural and tourist features of Salento. Moreover, the Programme provides the town of Lecce with a competitive role in the promotion of a maritime polycentric system of transports. Through the promotion of a wide and heterogeneous range of interventions, the Programme aims to relaunch the role of Lecce as cultural and territorial node to network the Apulia region with Greece and Albany. In addition, the Programme strengthens the local economy national and international competitive role to promote entrepreneurship and create new and innovative job opportunities.

Objectives
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Lecce lists three levels of action:
  • A “System action” that aims to create a territorial marketing plan and a feasibility study in order to identify the interventions to be developed and the actions to be improved to enhance the cultural-environmental and infrastructural features of the area
  • A “Context action” that aims to define the strategic framework to strengthen the networking capacities among the Cities of the Salento area and between them and their transnational partners, namely Greece and Albany
  • A “Local action” that aims to investigate the feasibility of a parking area in the historical city centre of Lecce and the regeneration of the touristic port of S. Cataldo.
Products
The main products of the network are the following:
  • a marketing plan and a feasibility study to promote a common integrated economic and territorial strategy and define a transport pattern to be implemented in the target area
  • the measures to promote the tourist attractiveness of the Salento area and to enhance the role of Lecce as cultural and historical pole
  • a parking area in the Lecce city centre to strengthen interchanges
  • the regeneration of S. Cataldo’s port to strengthen its touristic features and the connections with the Greek island and coastal zones.
EU involvement
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Lecce aims at creating a tight cooperation between the Apulia region and the European system of cities involved in the European corridors 1 (Berlin-Palermo) and 8 (South-West Europe) of the TEN networks. Moreover, the Programme aims to promote the role of the town of Lecce as a pole to promote cooperation between the internal and the Adriatic sea European Countries, with particular regard to the future development of the Motorways of the Sea.
