Campobasso, capital of the Molise Region, has experienced a great urban expansion during the 60s and 70s. Moreover, the separation of the Molise and the Abruzzo Regions, emphasized the role of Campobasso as the main burocratic-administrative centre of the Region. The city centre still presents its original medieval character, even though it holds many buildings of the XVII and the XVIII century. The area surrounding the town centre hosts the main public buildings and several commercial activities. The area is affected by problems related to recent urban growth that have produced many social challenges, urban blight, social degradation and abandoning of public spaces.
The strategic objective of the Urban Italia Campobasso Programme is the functional re-urbanization and regeneration of urban spaces of the town and of its surrounding areas. The target area presents a range of physical, environmental, and socio-economic weaknesses. The Urban Italia Campobasso Programme carries out a set of actions to improve the living standards of the area through the promotion of internal cooperation between the city centre and its surrounding areas. The added value of the Urban Italia Campobasso Programme is the strengthening of material and immaterial networks to increase the effectiveness of urban renewal and social regeneration.

The Urban Italia Campobasso Programme promotes a network based on the implementation of partnerships and networks at local level. It aims at re-connecting urban and rural areas in order to regenerate the city and its surrounding areas. This objective is pursued through the territorial integration of external rural areas within the urban periphery. The Urban Italia Campobasso Programme stimulates citizens participation and their identification with the local territory. The implementation of a system of data transmission (called “data transmission squares”) connects strategic areas of the city through a web-based central portal.

The “data transmission squares” work as a portal for knowledge transmission and allows the diffusion and acquisition of important information about the status of urban development and social issues within the area. The system provides citizens with an important information service and is considered a pole to promote social aggregation. Other actions focus on the reorganisation of transport system of the target area (pedestrian and bycicle paths, promenades, ecological corridors).
